Climbing Out Of The Valley Of Grief - A Grief Workshop in Kamloops
When a person needs support and practical suggestions for mourning, the Climbing Out of the Valley grief workshop put on by C&C Resources in Kamloops BC is a great support. In this workshop we address the nature of and emotions involved in their grief. As a team of Kamloops counsellors, we believe that group therapy is highly beneficial in working through grief. For this reason we regularly provide this workshop to the community so that participants can experience companionship in their grief journey and realize they are not alone.
Helen Keller once said, “We bereaved are not alone. We belong to the largest company in all the world – the company of those who have known suffering. When it seems that our sorrow is too great to be borne, let us think of the great family of the heavy-hearted into which our grief has given us entrance, and inevitably, we will feel about us their arms, their sympathy, their understanding.”
Grief was never meant to be borne alone. In the early days of grief, family and friends surround us, allow us to cry on their shoulders, bring us food, offer us the gift of a listening ear as we recount the details of our loss, laugh and cry with us over shared memories. But when they are gone – back to their homes, their jobs and their lives – we are often alone. Alone. Right when the work of reconciling ourselves to our loss is the most difficult and the most painful.
C & C Resources for Life recognizes that there are a number of tasks involved in mourning and these tasks are best undertaken with the support of people who really understand grief and loss. For this reason we have designed our Climbing out of the Valley Grief Workshop to address the special needs of grieving people in the Kamloops area.
Shared Experiences at Grief Workshops
The first thought that comes to your mind when you think of a grief workshop might be – “But I don’t want to break down in front of other people.” Or maybe it is, “I’m worried that if I hear about other people’s grief I will feel worse than I already do.” Let me reassure you from the 10+ years that I have been running grief workshops, you may feel like that for the first half hour of the first session; but after that, the relief of being heard by people who are sharing an experience similar to yours takes over and you will find yourself grateful that you made the decision to engage with a group. I have always marvelled at the change that takes place in the dynamics of a group during that first session. The group may begin with some hesitancy, but by the end of 2 hours, I usually can’t get people to stop talking.
What To Expect at a Grief Workshop
So what does a grief workshop look like? To allow for time to process all the information and apply it to our personal experience with grief, we have divided the workshop into 6 sessions over a 6 week period – each session lasting from 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the size of the group. The cost is $180. Group participants generally represent a variety of different losses – different relationships, different causes of death, different lengths of time since the loss. Group size is limited to a maximum of 8 participants and closed to new registrants after the first week. This allows for the group members to become better acquainted with each other and feel safe to share more personal information. All groups are facilitated by a professional grief counsellor who is skilled in guiding group discussions. During the 6 weeks we discuss the nature of grief, the primary emotions of grief (including sadness, anger, guilt and fear), some helpful ways of remembering and mourning, and some hints for dealing with special days like birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc. Every session gives opportunities for sharing personal narratives but no one is ever pressured to speak. Privacy and confidentiality are respected to ensure a high degree of safety.
