Trauma and bereavement can be either the cause or the result of broken relationships within the family. Our counsellors work within the framework of Family Systems Theory along with Gottman techniques to help people understand the impact of stress on their closest relationship(s) and begin to recognize the dysfunctional patterns that need to be worked on. Using a developmental model, we coach each member of the family to look at their role and their contribution to the relationship. We seek to provide a safe space for couples to work on rebuilding mutual trust, love and respect as part of a healthy way of relating to each other. Through role playing and homework, we coach parents and children to practice new ways of communicating and interacting to produce change in their family dynamics. If a family is already in the process of separation or divorce we address the trauma and the grief associated with that relationship breakdown and seek to facilitate healthy, respectful ways of moving forward for each individual family member.
